First, I didn’t connect or care about any of the characters, most are just not likable. Second, he made two main characters recovering alcoholics that attend AA. I felt like it didn’t add personality to either and having some experience with AA, I always find portrayals of it in books somewhat laughable because it is rarely accurately relayed. Third, the necromancer’s magic gets more outlandish as the book goes on. There is a big battle scene that I thought was ridiculous and hence, not scary. He does do creepy well – though not consistently in this book. The Rusalka and Baba Yaga are some of the creepiest representations I’ve read.
